Miss Nelson is Missing was written by Harry Allard and illustrated by James Marshall. This book tells the classic tale of a sweet teacher whose students tend to misbehave. One day, Miss Nelson doesn't come to class and in her place is the scary Viola Swamp. Miss Swamp immediately whips the kids into shape, and the kids soon realize that they miss their old teacher. Only then do the students come to appreciate Miss Nelson. This is a charming tale for younger students, but its themes and lessons can be studied in middle school classes as well. Students could practice their knowledge of setting, plot, conflict, and especially characterization. Students could also write their own stories based off the original story. Allard, Harry. (1977). Miss Nelson is Missing. Houghton Mifflin.
