Picture Book

Where the Wild Things Are is the story of Max, a young and imaginative boy who is sent to his room without supper. Although this would be punishment for most children, Max's room transforms into a jungle where he is king. This book won the Caldecott Award in 1964. Written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are could be used to teach students about setting, plot, and characterization. This book could also be used as a sample from which students could model their own imaginative/creative writing assignments. Sendak, Maurice. (1988). Where the Wild Things Are. HarperCollins.
