Mary Lennox is an orphan who is sent to live in her uncle's home. Here, she meets her cousin, a sick child who is locked away in a hidden room. With another friend she meets, Mary begins exploring the grounds of the manor and finds a secret garden. This book is a great tool to use with upper elementary or middle school students and can teach about adversity, loneliness, and what India and England were like nearly a century ago.
